Cons

Middle Senior leadership need to be changed, identify transformers on middle and bottom to bring up and also combined with some outsiders ( middle means, Directors and VPs)

Advice to Management

Reduce the SVP and VP layer and promote more Directors to put decision makers closer to customers

    Pros

    Work culture is good - there's a good sense of trust and delegation. Managers strive for work/life balance. In addition, there's a lot of diversity of job functions and roles.

    Cons

    For those coming from smaller companies or companies with less virtual meetings, adapting to the semi-virtual work environment takes time. Even if someone works at HQ, they might spend 70% of their time with virtual teams. Promotions take longer than at many other companies.

    Increase focus on incentivizing employees

    Pros

    Cisco is a pretty good spot to land if you're coming to Silicon Valley from somewhere else.

    Cons

    Cisco's engineering organization runs on nepotism. The performance reviews happen in reverse: The management decides whom they want to move up, then they give those folks the choice assignments, and at review time everyone declares success and enacts what was predetermined. Any failure to execute is obfuscated so it doesn't impede the process. Cisco's engineering is a giant grinder where the movement of the people up and down is what's important and the products are just a sausage coming out of the side. If you want to do engineering work I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on engineering excellence and build a cult of personality around the software developer like has been done so successfully at Google and Facebook. Make internal product development be driven by rapid prototyping instead of by Powerpoint.
