I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Competitive pay, good benefits and the advantages of contributing in a world-class, world-leading institution. Most management is flexible and focused on results. Definite benefit to working in California but the good news is that the mentality is slowly changing and telecommuting is more and more accepted. A case of "eating your own dog food" since Cisco sells the technologies that allow for remote work. Had I not have a family illness I needed to tend to I'd still be there.

Cons

Has lost some of the agility as it has grown. There are some people who still cling to the past rather than work at making today and tomorrow better. When I was there they were moving to the open concept work space

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Decent salary and benefits.
    - You can cruise along without doing much in some business units

    Cons

    - You can cruise along without doing much in some business units - low performers rarely fired
    - No emphasis on innovation - you will pretty much be adding some incremental little features on existing systems or maintaining legacy systems.
    - Not a place for young superstars. Even if you rank in the top performance bracket, you might not get a promotion because there are 15 other older folks in the promotion pipeline.

    Advice to Management

Lots of dead wood in middle management, get rid of it.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You meet some brilliant people, and sometimes there are a few cool projects you can come across. Also, great flexibility in terms of work-life balance.

    Cons

A lot of hot air, and it can take LOT of time to get anything done. Some areas are pretty bureaucratic in nature and it can bog down your interest.

    Advice to Management

Give people freedom to do things as fast as they want to!
