I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

-Great community of people
-Several compelling areas to work
-Good support for developers
-So many mergers and acquisitions that there is always an influx of new talent and technology

If you are looking for a place to begin a career and are looking for a stable, corporate-type job, Cisco is perfect. They have a great community and support system, but there is no mistaking the environment for a start-up. I joined out of college and learned quite a bit before deciding to pursue my MBA, so I think it can be an interesting first step in a career.

Cons

-Not great at placing people in the best position all the time.
-Lots of bureaucracy involved in generating and following through on ideas.

While I joined as a recent college grad, most people at Cisco are in the latter half of their careers. This limits some of the entrepreneurial spirit and stifles some of the more creative ideas. There are pockets of innovation, so if you find them you can really thrive. Just don't expect that to be the norm.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, can't complain about pay and progression. Always treated well and rewarded adequately for good work.

    Cons

Large fiefdoms in the company, with high-mid/upper management always focusing on improving careers. Have to leave company and work at start-ups to do any real innovation that requires risk.

    Advice to Management

Several employees really only care only about their careers, and not about making great and innovative/lucrative products. This can include all levels of management as well, as mid-upper management will kill innovative projects they did not start themselves as they gain power/influence. Does not happen all the time - some times some projects should get killed. However, when people are making decisions not based on customers or business opportunity, but purely their personal gain - it hurts the company as a whole.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Collaborative, supportive culture. Management typically supports telecommuting and PTO for family emergencies. The company is very responsive to larger enterprise customers.

    Cons

Execution in this big company can often get confused. Frequently, obvious issues fall through the cracks and result in disappointed customers. Aiming high for innovation is that much more challenging, and the company is still not software-oriented in multiple ways.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of 50-75% of the VPs and above. Many of them are great at Powerpoints and meeting with customers, but they don't understand the products or operations that they're in charge of. Give big bonuses to directors, managers and line employees who do execute well, and even bigger bonuses to those who innovate well.
