I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Very smart and innovative pool of talent. Great access to the best tools and a great work environment. They treat people very well and felt like I was well compensated.

Cons

Some groups suffer the usual problems of organization and leadership with in a large corporation. Cisco is big and not nimble. Some corporate politics exists, especially when it comes to annual reviews.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There is opportunity to build working relationships with people globally. Working from home is convenient and may be a wonderful option for young families.

    Cons

Internal politics and constant restructuring is the worse part of Cisco. It can be very frustrating to constantly change direction. There are long periods of no leadership during those upheavals. Management can be political and not act in the best interest of their employees. People who are looking for a truly collaborative, trusting, and kind environment may want to look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Just because you have been at Cisco all of your career, don't be so afraid of losing your job that you become political, and even throw people under the bus for your own gain.

I have been working at Cisco Systems as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management takes a lot of stock in your career, and provides resources for advancement. The 'fun' culture diminished for a while, but executives have recognized, and are empowering management to improve.
Excellent overall company vision with the right executive staff on-board to execute.

    Cons

Company is focusing on hiring more college graduates in order to infuse a younger workforce within the company. I understand the reasoning, but Cisco is losing a great deal of industry experience by overlooking the seasoned Cisco professionals.

    Advice to Management

Identify the talent within the contractor workforce, and do what you can to retain or hire those individuals as Cisco employees.
