I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Good opportunities to learn if you are in the right organization, know the right thing to say to the right people

Cons

Career growth depends on who you know and not what you have delivered or can deliver. Applying to internal job posting works if you know the hiring manager.

Advice to Management

Employees are more than just numbers

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees are extremely dedicated, and the environment is fast-paced. Since Cisco is the "human network" corporate communicators have the latest technology at their finger tips for getting communications created and disseminated. If you don't already know some of these tools you'll have to get up to speed quickly, which is both challenging and educationally stimulating.

    Cons

Detailed PowerPoint slides are over-used and most of the time completely unnecessary. They are time consuming and costly to create. Projects are started then dropped with frequency. This is also very costly. Next it's everyone out of the pool and layoffs. If the company ran more efficiently in the first place would there be need for constant reorgs?

    Advice to Management

Employee morale would benefit from better organization at the top and less reorganizations. Also improve internal communications across the board so the right hand better understands what the left hand is doing.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Company was stable to work for for years. Good career progression up until promoted to Director.

    Cons

Recycled senior management - no outside hiring for top tier - no new perspectives. leadership missed the boat in too many markets (flip video vs cameras on cell phones, telepre$ence vs Skype, Cloud XaaS, the list goes on and on)....

    Advice to Management

Change the upper management - everyone has been recycled and there is no vision or strategy that comes from the outside
