I worked at Citi full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

- Lot of responsibility
- Exposure to very smart investors
- Good way to learn about the equities business; interact with sales, trading, and other research teams

Cons

- Lack of well-defined path to promotion
- Associates often do more work than the senior analyst for half the pay or less
- Citi's internal processes often made writing/publishing reports painful

Advice to Management

- Better comp for high-performing associates
- Reduce bureaucratic overhead

I have been working at Citi full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

For such a large company, the communication is very good. I feel like I know what is happening because Vikram Pandit is very transparent about where we stand before earnings reports and big announcements are made.

    Cons

Sometimes it's hard to tell what your individual impact is to the company's overall progress.

    Advice to Management

Know what your employees are working on, and show your appreciation so that they know you care about and appreciate their efforts. Help them understand their overall impact to the larger organization, even if it is in small, non-monetary ways (team recognition, pat on the back, thank you note, etc.).

I worked at Citi full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    + Global firm
+ Exposure to all financial instruments
+ Ability to move to different offices - both domestically and also internationally
+ Not as focused on which school you attended as other investment banks

    Cons

+ Lost a lot of senior managers during the downturn as their equity became worthless
+ M&A often run by M&A team only with coverage providing support
+ Lacks prestiege of Goldman, Morgan - impairs exit opportunities
    + Long hours

    Advice to Management

+Should break up corporate and investment bank - currently together. Most IBD analysts do not want to be working on corporate banking pitches - nor is it helpful for interviewing for PE, HF, Corp Dev or other traditional IBD exit opportunities
