I have been working at Citi full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Opportunity to acquire knowledge and work on a varied environment. Excellent local teamwork.

Cons

Too centralized and very unflexible place. Does not supports feedback from employees. Medium management has very little decision making. Top management is focused on short time resources and learns very little from previous experiences. Promotes the "yes-man" culture. Very little thorough analysis is done on many decisions when is idea that is pushed downward. Extremelly use of politics. When a specific regiona makes money the triumphs arfe not shared but when a critical situatiion is encountered lower level employees pay for the incorrect management decision. "Greed is good" is the silent culture of management. "The Citi never sleeps neither does the medium management employees!". No consideration for customer service levels as long as no complany CEO complaints. Employee reviews are manipulated from seniors byspassing the direct managers ratings.

Advice to Management

Improve "honest" communications. Do not have written policies and principles that you dont intend to honor. Focus on custoemr satisfaction to maintain long term profits and customer loyalty. Improve employees morale to increase loyalty. Globalization/regionalizsation isnot always the solution. Custoemrs want to maitain realtions wiht the company not the machines. Elimination of local jobvs will eventually impact profits.

I worked at Citi full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Telecommute - Many received mandatory 3 days a week work from home due to downsizing of real estate in key states, New York, New Jersey, etc. Ability to work from home was a benefit to me.
Holiday/Vacation Time off - Received 17 days vacation on hire in, and 12 holidays. It is probably typical, but was more than I had before.

    Cons

Training - They have no money in budget for training. They will expect you to be CISSP, but getting it approved goes all the way to the top, and then they won't pay for travel. Any other training you need to stay current on IT will never be approved, and if you had to travel to the class or conference, it will NEVER be approved. They have high expectations on your IT skill level, but do not send you to any training that's critical for you to stay current! CAREER SUICIDE!
PAY - Worked there over 5 years, my pay went up 1% or less each year even with great performance reviews. Citi = no money.
FAVORITISM - People are promoted based on Senior Managers needing head count under them so they look important and don't lose their jobs. People are promoted not based on experience/skills but on hidden agendas. Bonuses, training, pay increases come from who you know, not what you know.
LAYOFFS - Merry Christmas, Citi likes to do mass layoffs at the end of the year to avoid bonus payouts in January. They have reduced their size by over 100,000 employees in the last 1-2 years. This is not a career company.
VACATION DAYS DO NOT CARRY OVER - You can't carry over more than 5 days, and you'll have to use them by March 31st.
TECHNOLOGY - All the banks they acquired during the getting fat/rich days, created a lot of older technology to be supported. The recent sell offs the last few years has gotten rid of some of it, but the current technology wasn't able to be maintained and invested in. Many systems are running 4-5 years behind current releases.

    Advice to Management

    Promote hard working performers.
Get rid of the Manager's with hidden agendas.
Ask for 360 degree feedback from works on their managers, you will be enlightened!
Get training $ to the employees, or you are going to lose some really good IT people like you did ME!
