Pros

Location, no stress, easyt going

Cons

Boring job - no upside.
-Long hours.
-Incompetent staff.
-Incompetent managers.
-Multiple projects at the same time with same deadlines.
-Decent salary, but the pay does not justify hours and stress levels.
-Mobile devices - blackberry and laptop give managers the right to bother you whenever and wherever with questions. No clear distinction between work and life balance.
-Some industry groups have "cliques." The partners of these cliques work on the best clients of that particular group, determine compensation, and promotions. You need to luck out and get on one of those clients or you are out of luck. Careers shouldn't be based on luck of the draw.

    Pros

There are a select number of really passionate people who make the somewhat boring work meaningful. If you have a good work ethic, you'll really stick out.

    Cons

Three people hired to do one job. Rather than hiring the best, multiple underqualified people are hired to compensate. Some micromanaging is common.

    Advice to Management

Hold employees to higher standards. Push for thinking outside the box to improve office and program efficiency.

I worked at City of Baltimore full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Once probation is over, job security is pretty matchless compared to most other employers. Professional development classes available, free fitness classes, lots of paid time off and various types of leave for eligible employees.

    Cons

Depending on what level of work you do it can get predictable and stale pretty fast. Lots of bureaucracy. Lots of "office politics" but that's inescapable in an office anyway. No other real cons.

    Advice to Management

If you're in a management position, be like my former supervisor and support the growth of the people you supervise. Some managers don't do this and shoot themselves in the foot in the long run.
