    Pros

    - City jobs have great benefits including a pension.
    - Good vacation.
    - Flexible hours and I never had to work long hours, although i could occasionally and was compensated with time and half off. In a year I accrued almost 3 weeks of paid time off not counting vacation and other standard holidays.

    Cons

    -No innovation
-Terrible management in terms of skills. All the managers were friendly and nice, they just never had formal training.
    -No employee training.
-People are promoted on seniority not ability. The management is top heavy with 20 year city veterans who have not been exposed to a new idea since leaving college. This in every facet of public service, but the IT department was shockingly bad. We still used DOS.

    Advice to Management

Take some management strategy classes. Learn how to reward and encourage employees. Everyone was nice, but did not have basic competencies to run a successful department. I would recommend city jobs for people who do not have a higher education. The pay is fair at those levels, benefits are incredible and the jobs are stable. The work life balance is good for anyone with children. The City is not a place for people who want to progress in their career and be rewarded for new ideas.
