I have been working at City of Phoenix full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Learn a Diverse Technology Stack

    Cons

Work really, really hard for less and less salary
Peers in private industry do one part of tech for more salary, you do lots of diverse tech for less salary
    Reactive Environment
Spread very thinly (personnel, technology, and mgmt)
    Too diverse of technology platforms
Too much work, not enough qualified people
    Lack of Tech Direction
    Thankless work
    Customers are never happy
Business is stuck doing things old fashioned way and wont even consider new ways afforded by tech
Lack of Project Management for new work
Lack of modern work amenities (no work from home, etc)
One person is responsible to setup server, dev app, test app, deploy app -> see the problem here

    Advice to Management

    Change all your thinking
Think tech and business and less govt
Govt thinking isn't working nationwide and globally
Expand the parameters of govt "how we've always done business" to be competitive with the world

I worked at City of Phoenix full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Diverse environment with exposure to numerous technologies and unique business processes; great co-workers; ability to make a contribution to the City and feel good about what you do.

    Cons

Shortage of opportunities for growth, many things progress very slowly due to the bureaucracy, some employees take advantage of "protected status" and put for minimal effort.
