Pros

Great benefits, some positions are rewarding and good for the community, some positions are offered educational reimbursement, educational insentive bonuses.

Cons

Right now, no job security. Senior Management spends budget on pet projects and doesn't have enough for employees. Possible Layoffs and mandatory furloughs result and that is after a voluntary seperation program. No communication between management and employees. The city is like 18 million dollars in debt and employees found out about most of it through the local newspaper. Also, the management spends money on consultants to do things they could probably accomplish themselves. This includes a consultant to figure out what parts of the budget were priorities, and then they changed their minds and cut 10 percent off the board.

Advice to Management

Save money and communicate. Employees are more important than projects

    Pros

The City of Stockton was a wonderful place to work. From the top down, the City tried to do the best for its employees. Since there are no "bonuses" to be paid in public employment, the City regularly held appreciation or recognition events for the employees. The workload varied daily and the daily challenges made the work fascinating.

    Cons

Salaries are coming up, but still are below similar sized communities.

I worked at City of Stockton, California (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great team. Working environment is very pleasing. Coworkers are very easy to get along with. You get to learn a lot from working with different departments.

    Cons

City going bankrupt. Furloughs cutting ours and price of benefits going up. Traveled a lot throughout the San Joaquin county.

    Advice to Management

Support your employees. Having company vehicles would help with car expenses. Letting employees work from home. Stop the furloughs and give back the benefits that were not costing to much.
