I have been working at CivitasMedia full-time

Pros

Not much can be said

Cons

Demeaning to individual newspaper management, publicly critical of own management team in front of workforce. A real lack of communication on large projects from top down. One wonders if this is not intentional to force people to quit.

Advice to Management

Back off a little. Acting like a major project being poorly implemented is not a big deal is very demoralizing. Give more time for work assignments to be accomplished, Allow time for proper implementation. For God's sake hire someone to plan these transitions out. The smartest people in the world don't all come from North Carolina. The formation of Civitas has been more like a hostile takeover than a merger.

I worked at CivitasMedia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you want to be paid the same as someone working in food service without having to touch food, you can work here.

    Cons

When this company bought the newspaper I worked for, they began to slash and burn right away. All of the designers were consolidated into two pagination hubs. The designers were offered a meager/laughable relocation bonus. After doing this, they changed the design of all of their newspapers and websites to one sub-par, standard design without consulting any of the papers about their needs. The transition was a mess.

They force editors to lay off part of what little staff they have left, and then institute unrealistic story quotas for the remaining reporters. Quality is clearly not a priority. Management has no respect for those doing the work or reading their newspapers. They are trying to squeeze every last dollar from the newspapers they own. Employees are expendable and there is no room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

If you have trouble sleeping at night, I hear Unisom is a great sleep aid.
