Negative Outlook

I worked at College Bound as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Being able to work with students.

Cons

Management. It is a non-profit founded by people who believe more in being seen helping students, moreso than actually helping students. The philosophy of the organization is contradictory at best, with workers and management playing favorites with some students/workers, while constantly ignoring others. Academic support for students is highly ignored to increase the dependence of the students on the organization and the people who work there. It is an organization which hurts students more than helping them, by teaching them to abandon their culture and become co-dependent on the system, rather than being independent critical thinking citizens. But then, what can you expect from an organization that doesn't even have one person with a degree in education?

Also, the use of statistics and information at best is irresponsible, and at worst is illegal. They still track students who have left the program without their knowledge, and only report on students who succeed within the program. Their "100%" graduation rate is more like 50%.

Advice to Management

Quit abusing statistics, and stop lying to students and parents. Open up an advertising agency, since that's all that you are good at.

    Pros

College Bound actively seeks the opinions of staff to understand areas for improvement. It is the goal of College Bound for all staff and AmeriCorps members to feel valued and appreciated. This is shown through different methods of appreciation from monthly staff activities and week long appreciation celebrations.

In additional efforts to value employees and AmeriCorps members, College Bound is building up their Human Resource function to provide policy structure to staff and AC's that show added value and benefit for their work and service.

    Cons

It's not your typical 9-5 job. You will put in long hours at times for the benefit of the mission. But, just as we work hard, we celebrate our successes hard as well.
