I worked at Columbia University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity for impact in your niche and the education benefit for officers

    Cons

Poor organizational design - highly decentralized campus, often duplicative and competitive services. I worked in undergraduate student affairs, politics often drove decisions and impacted organizational structure.

Student body is overly entitled, not very resillent and many students have developmental challenges (psychological and emotional).

CU is not a supportive environment for administrators of color - racism is deeply embedded throughout the system. Micro-aggressions are the norm.

    Advice to Management

Train middle and senior managers for effectiveness in their roles, particularly from the point that they are given supervisory responsibilities. Managers are often hired not because of their people abilities but because they were effective in other functions.

  2. "Good university to work for but internal operation is not on par with external brand reputation"

I have been working at Columbia University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great brand reputation. Bright students and colleagues. Beautiful campus. Generous benefits. Neighborhood offers excellent living quality for faculty members.

    Cons

Poor facilities (classrooms, cafeterias, etc.). Administrative support structure (IT, student services, audio-visual, HR online, etc.) is very poor. Culture and values vary a lot across schools. School for faculty children has very limited space due to 50 percent of seats conceded to neighborhood.

    Advice to Management

Invest on infrastructure. Raise the bar on tenure.
