     - (Limited) opportunity to interact with movers and shakers in state policy

    Cons

     - Incompetence is rewarded
     - Ambition is disregarded
     - Lack of direction/effective leadership

    Pros

Good salary and benefits - health insurance, many holidays, generous vacation & sick time, 403b retirement plan. Vision and dental plans are ok. Many state employees are dedicated civil servants who are inspiring to work with

    Cons

Pay increases are minimal and pre-determined/union-negotiated - no merit increases. Few opportunities for advancement unless you have an advanced degree. High employee retention but sometimes older workers are uninterested in innovating, learning new skills, or improving efficiency. Bureaucracy and state oversight tends to slow processes down.
