I have been working at Commonwealth of Pennsylvania full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Several paid holidays in line with many Federal holidays and workers, easy to advance system for job changes and promotions once you are employed with an agency. Steady hours, good pay for each level of skill/job performed.

    Cons

Can be held hostage in pay, work, etc by Union representation. Even if you are a non-contributing employee and non-union member, most jobs are Union classified. Therefore in annual budget fights with the Legislature or Governors Office, furloughs and other things can be deal with annually if agreements are not reached by fiscal deadlines. Most jobs are located in Harrisburg, central PA area. So you would have to relocate remotely close to commute daily.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Pennsylvania full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are a recent graduate and want to build your IT resume, I'd recommend the state of PA. Your salary will not meet the current industry standard but the opportunity to dramatically increase your skill set is worth it.

    Cons

The union contract makes it almost impossible to fire anyone so some of you coworkers will be incompetent and unprofessional. You'll have to learn to carry some of their load.

    Advice to Management

If the IT professional is not properly trained, they should not be promoted to a managerial position.
