Pros

Some of the clients truly appreciate what the staff do for them and show this appreciation with words and actions.

Cons

Many of the clients don't appreciate all that staff do for them and will knock down staff verbally and management says, "Clients are mentally ill, what do you expect"? Staff aren't supported with high-risk clients. Other cons are poor health insurance and problems with claim reimbursement.

Advice to Management

Get input from direct staff regarding client care because we have daily contact with them and know them best. Have management spend the day with clients and staff to realize the issues both face on a day-to-day basis to help management better understand concerns.

I worked at Community Counseling of Bristol County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Supportive coworkers, dedicated to mission statement, dedicated to serving persons in programs whether from community or as part of a contract to provide services, evidence-based practice commitment, management is committed to continuing education, excellent flexibility, support for training required for job and/or licensing as applicable to the role, some really fantastic managers and supervisors, good benefits, generous time off for all employees, dedicated to quality improvement.

    Cons

Can hang onto under functioning employees, even if they are in management, too long, which has an impact on morale

    Advice to Management

After multiple chances are given, employees not meeting expectations, especially those in management, need to be let go.

I worked at Community Counseling of Bristol County full-time

    Pros

A very stable management team, most of whom have been with the organization for many years. CCBC provides tremendous support to a variety of clients across the age range who struggle with behavioral health challenges. The CEO has built this company into a broad-based and effective community resource, over the last 45+ years.

    Cons

A very stable management team, most of whom have been with the organization for many years, which means little fresh perspective and what there is is not often heeded. Management styles tend to be capricious, and very "top down" with decisions of some managers based more on personality and personality conflicts rather than business goals; there are often ill defined lines of responsibility, with some senior management overseeing areas for which they have no or little experience, temperament or training; pay scale is low at the more junior levels, which while recognizing the challenge of financial resources, can result in loss of good staff and is likely not entirely worth the expense of replacing them.

    Advice to Management

More encouragement of hearing perspectives from "lower levels" of staff; and some capacity to respond to the concerns and suggestions, perhaps anonymously to prevent retaliations. An exploration of the "open secrets", including role and management style of the CFO, would benefit the organization and result in more energy into what is an admirable and important mission. Infrastructure is not sufficient for the organizational needs: HR, IT, and analytics most specifically.
