I have been working at Community Counseling of Bristol County full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Laid back atmosphere, young staff. Inside of your 9-5 hours you make your own schedule. Occasionally, you really do make a difference in someone's life (ie getting someone out of homelessness or helping someone quit their substance abuse). Supervisors are down to earth and supportive. Time off is given with no fuss. Miles you put on your care are paid back at about 45 cents a mile.
Tuition reimbursement for graduate school.
Good experience for resume (you are essentially a social worker, which many companies recognize as a tough, detail-oriented job).
Life outside of work is respected- you are expected to leave at 5 (as opposed to other salaried jobs expecting you to stay an hour or two later).

Cons

Low pay (28k starting), few computers and office supplies to go around. Encouraged to over-bill Masshealth for things (eg tax payer money).
Sometimes you have to help scum bags and moochers sign up for welfare they don't need when they really should be getting a job.
You get some entitled and ignorant clients sometimes (and sometimes you get sweethearts- just the luck of the draw).
Not well trained to deal with suicidal clients who see you as a therapist-type support.
You have to drive your clients around in your own car- either you get commercial drivers insurance (costs extra) or you risk getting sued by your client if you get in an accident.
Not much room for advancement.
Changes in company policy coming down all the time, which usually end up bloating your office work to increase billing.

Advice to Management

Ask CSPs more for input on company policy changes. The community support program could be run a lot more efficiently if only we were asked. Please invest in more computers for offices.

I have been working at Community Counseling of Bristol County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This company serves seriously mentally ill people with compassion and respect, and provides behavioral health and substance abuse services, housing, and other support services to children, adults and seniors. The CEO is a dedicated and compassionate man, who provides the best benefits he can to the employees given the reality of funding at the present time.

    Cons

Their size has outgrown their systems, so there is a frustrating degree of disorganization and communication gaps. The CFO is much too involved in clinical and facility operations that are not her areas of expertise and causes internal divisions that are not necessary or helpful.

    Advice to Management

The organization needs better communication, a real HR department and a real IT department, not just "fill-ins". Listen more to the employees about what is important to us. We have a new COO Let him do his job.

  2. "Management is out of touch with direct staff and daily happenings with clients."

I have been working at Community Counseling of Bristol County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the clients truly appreciate what the staff do for them and show this appreciation with words and actions.

    Cons

Many of the clients don't appreciate all that staff do for them and will knock down staff verbally and management says, "Clients are mentally ill, what do you expect"? Staff aren't supported with high-risk clients. Other cons are poor health insurance and problems with claim reimbursement.

    Advice to Management

Get input from direct staff regarding client care because we have daily contact with them and know them best. Have management spend the day with clients and staff to realize the issues both face on a day-to-day basis to help management better understand concerns.
