I have been working at Compuware full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Good coworkers, still quite a few good developers left, vacation time

Cons

Too many old-timers in the management rank. Development managers and technical team leads with mainframe background not understanding how modern applications should look like. Development managers not understanding the products they manage...
Technology used for new development is already obsolete so there are really few opportunities to learn anything new. There is no clear vision of where we are going and the direction changes often. When the direction changes it's "drop what you were doing" and work on something else that's hot at the moment.

Advice to Management

The company has been shrinking for years., It will continue to do that and it will eventually be sold unless there is a major shakeup of middle-level management. Bring in people that understand current technology and are able to define a long term vision for Compuware products

I worked at Compuware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed working in downtown Detroit, and there were nice benefits, such as a gym in the building. Compensation was fair.

    Cons

The company is filled with people just keeping their heads down, trying not to make waves and keep their jobs. Mid-management mentality and bureaucracy and feeling of an "old-boys network" is maddening. Upper management speaks in buzzwords about making things happen but positive changes are few and far between. Constant changes at the VP level makes direction of the company always seem to be in flux.

    Advice to Management

Hire people at the management/VP level that have actually made positive changes at other under-performing large companies, and act on their advice.
