I worked at Cooper Industries full-time (More than a year)

Pros

The work is fairly easy and there was always a lot to do. Most mid-level managers are good to work with and have a strong work ethic but need some development. The work environment is very customer driven.

Cons

There were too many open positions that management either did not want to fill or were unable to fill. Seems like it was a shell game trying to cover all of the openings with the same people. Very surprising that they could not attract people given the state of the economy.

Advice to Management

Decide what you want your business to be and build your team around it. Most people want to be a part of it but are tired of the sudden direction changes and last minute ultimatums.

    Pros

    Nice climate.
Outside the congestion of Atlanta, while still conveniently close to the city or country life.
Nice people at the exempt level and non-exempt level.
Some very sharp people in senior management.

    Cons

A blind spot with respect to market trends. Voice of the customer seems to be based on which third party agent talks the loudest, which has resulted in some gaps in market presence.
Little to no investment in new ventures. Very capital constrained when expansion into market segments would dictate stronger commitment.
Motivation is carrot and stick without the carrot.
Very short term focus--resources are spent meeting the most recent idea instead of planning and sticking to a long term plan.
Promotions and movement tend to be based on political or personal consideration, rather than who is making what happen.

    Advice to Management

There are some critical links that are weak. The technical and post-sales functions are bending over backwards to make things work.
Quit chasing orders that produce one-time sales that don't cover the cost of development and focus on grabbing market segments.
You have some very sharp people with good ideas. Just because you don't want to hear it, doesn't mean the idea lacks merit.
If you are going to increase the volume of projects, you need to invest in the support functions to make it happen.
Senior management should engage the people closest to bringing products to market, and ignore the games being played at mid-level management.

I have been working at Cooper Industries full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good work enviroment, flexible hours

    Cons

No room for growth, very high turnover in all positions, understaffed in all departments. Almost impossible to get anything done

    Advice to Management

Figure out and implement how Cooper Industires integrates with the divisions. Still running like different entities.
