I worked at Corning as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Group management was quite good. While human , they tried to strike a balance between company needs and employee needs. Group dynamics were very well managed and I really felt to be part of the team even as a contract worker.

Cons

Hr needs some work but to be fair so do most big companies. Although there were some shady goings on, I can also say I always felt safe to speak my mind. As is the case in most companies currently there is a perception that employees are interchangeable so a new one at lower pay is always as good as the current one if they have same qualifications. What isn't taken into consideration is the amount of efficiency gained while working there. As a result the individual group managers take a performance hit when people are replaced.

Advice to Management

Don't let accountants run your company, while giving group managers more hiring power may slightly increase payroll , the gain in productivity will be well worth it.

I worked at Corning full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Used to be VERY good, but they have shrunk over the last few years. Technology is among the highest in the world not located in a secret government lab.

    Cons

Corning wants "The Best", but they are only willing to pay the average for your service. Merit increases are very poor (1-2%, lower than inflation) despite $1B+ annual corporate profit numbers and cash-on-hand of over $3B. Upper management is removed from day-to-day happenings on the floor and doesn't recognize a valuable employee from a problem employee. Depite the poor raises, management expects 50-60 hrs/week plus ~1 weekend/month. Work/life balance is NOT good. If you live to work, this is your place. If you work to live, Corning will chew you up and spit you out. The ideal exempt employee is someone right out of school with no prior knowledge of how any other company goes about its business and treats employees. If you are mid-career, expect to be disappointed in how you are treated.

    Advice to Management

When a good employee disagrees with you on a major problem and is proven to actually be correct, it's not "living the Corning values" to then give that employee a low rating and 0% raise as you maneuver him into a position to effectively kick him out the door.

    Pros

There are many "give away gifts" - Overall, events-driven company. Opportunity to become involved in corporate challenge (etc.)
Benefits are good compared to other companies.

    Cons

    Management - Us against Them.
Work/Life Balance is terrible - 24/7 plant so shifting from day to night shift is difficult.

    Advice to Management

Management - do not have all the answers.....give production employees an opportunity to have input.
