I worked at Coupons.com full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Free lunch in area with no restaurants
Company seems to have lock on on-line coupon market

Cons

Founders have little grasp of technology used in OLTP at scale they do business at - still tied to processes that made sense when they started the company. Siloed development teams block one another. DBAs call shots. Not an environment where an engineer will progress technically.

Advice to Management

Get rid of half your management.

    I have been working at Coupons.com full-time

    Pros

    Even after 14 years of being in business, it's still has some start-up qualities
    - Casual dress
    - Plenty of free food that's pretty good
    - People are reasonably smart and friendly
    - Some latitude to be innovative

    Cons

    - Unnecessarily political atmosphere with lots of turf wars and siloed teams
    - Management often seems more focused on short-term targets than long-term strategy
    - High attrition in some areas
    - Lots of old-school systems and processes needing modernization, although they're working hard to update things

    Advice to Management

    Do whatever is necessary to get people feeling like they're all on one team, cut some of the red tape and CYAing that is hampering innovation, and keep the troops more focused on building a great company rather than hitting every short-term goal.

    Great people, solid leadership, outstanding business opportunities and potential moving forward. Refreshing to be working at a company where employees are doing their best to meet the challenges without all the politics.
