Pros

The company itself is fairly stable, so you have a reasonably good expectation of job security as long as you're there.

Cons

The company itself is fairly stable, so you have a reasonably good expectation of doing the same job for a while before you advance.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great benefits
    - Some very smart and cordial folks to work with
    - Interesting, mission-focused work with a variety of assignments

    Cons

    - Way way too many Directors and VPs, many with no direct reports
    - Too many people in a management role that shouldn't be due to having no people/interpersonal skills or scientific/research folks that work best as individual contributors. Example: my group had at least 10 people transfer or leave the company as a direct result of no longer wanting to work for our supervisor yet there were never any negative consequences for this VP. Managers should be flagged if too many folks leave their group.
    - Restrictive and over-bureaucratic IT department
    - Too much secrecy and poor communications overall from senior leadership; 5 stern reminders to complete the annual employee survey (which vanishes after limited results are released) but nothing about poor business outlook and potential layoffs for your site

    Advice to Management

    - Use feedback from exit interviews to flag poor managers and then actually do something about it; remember that people usually leave because of managers not jobs.
