I worked at Covidien full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Life saving products, great people in the non-managerial ranks, willing to invest in technology, for the most part, to support company initiatives

Cons

Beware around quarter and year-end periods, the company tries to slash their way to profitability and good numbers on paper. They have a habit of buying out smaller companies, taking their IP then letting them go. At times it seems like multiple, dysfunctional companies trying to operate as one.

Advice to Management

Change does not always equal improvement. Try settling things, and fixing internal issues and challenges before taking on more external projects. Try to smooth out the cycle of binge hiring and layoffs. The costs of on-boarding new employees and severance packages for lay offs must be astronomical.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Good, Knowledgeable people at mid to lower levels.

    Cons

R & D is poorly run and bad decision making (short term gain trumps long term success). Do not question leaders regardless of how little they understand (generic v. branded). Questionable business practices; poor ethics; Leadership by intimidation; Anything to save a dime including cutting corners and sacrificing quality. PM group led by micromanager who doesn't comprehend research yet influences every decision. Layoffs a possible strategy at any time to save money (2011 most recently). Running joke of the worker bees about Covidien is "We can't do it right the first time but we can do it again..."

    Advice to Management

What would someone you respect think of you decisions as well as unwritten policies and practices?
