Pros

Great place to work. They are flexible with time off if needed. Knowledge sharing is abundant which is good in such a fast pace environment. If your performance is good you will be rewarded for it. Overall i would say that it is great place to work.

Cons

Just the typical "corporate" things that go with a large company.

Advice to Management

Continue to help your employees excel and grow at what they do best.

    Pros

Good, stable company with family-friendly policies. Opportunity exists to switch career path, not only in Columbus but other Cummins Locations throughtout the world.

    Cons

Not much top-down communication. Often feels like your work is done to make supervisor look good instead of working to meet top management goals. Constant changes in employee benefits - hard to keep current. Different benefit plans for different groups of employees/locations, i.e. plans different for hourly employees depending on what union they belong to, which plant they work at and how much seniority they have. Makes it hard for HR generalist to keep the plans seperate in order to counsel employees. Company would benefit greatly by standardizing benefits for all employees.

    Advice to Management

Listen to people in the middle of the organization, the ones who actually do the work. You'll get a totally different perspective on how employees really feel and what truly goes on.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to excel, and a ton of resources at your disposal to get the job done. There is always something that needs to be done or can be improved or requires documentation. With so many things always on the go, its hard to imagine a time when one could get bored with working for Cummins.

The benefits at Cummins are another area that most companies would having difficulty beating. Cummins has standard 401K incentives, health and dental and very competative salaries. Additionally, Cummins has a yearly bonus of 0-16% of your salary depending on how the company fared in the last year.

    Cons

There is a great deal of information to shift through when you first join Cummins. This is a result of many many years of technical reports, engineering standard works, and standard operating procedures that have accumulated over the years. In addition, Cummins has a plethora of acronyms that make common communication anything but for a beginner. Expect to be lost, confused, and frustrated for the first 6 to 9 months after hire. Don't expect too much help, your coworkers will try where they can, but they will likely be swamped with their own work to give you a thorough show of the ropes. Unfortunately, the only way to learn as a new hire is to get messy and make some mistakes of your own.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of rating and ranking. This process of forced 2.5% attrition each year does more harm than good. Keep some of the grey hairs around; there experience is worth many times more the salary you are paying them.
