Pros

Good compensation, Christmas to New Year factory shutdown,

Cons

Small town, schools in town are so-so, not too much going on in Columbus (IN); without a MBA, it's almost impossible to move up in the engineering field.

Advice to Management

    Pros

Great colleagues, stable product with world-wide market penetration, and the profit sharing for professionals can be sizable.

    Cons

The management team has no clue on how to development people. Mentoring by managers ranges from mediocre to awful. Many managers have no clue as to the meaning of leadership. While they are generally good business or product managers, many managers would struggle to lead a Boy Scout troop.

Cummins' philosophy is to hire people, wait for a while, and then periodically lay off 20% of their workforce. Once laid off from Cummins as a professional, you can never return. While this philosophy works great for the HR department (it keeps them really busy), it is a drain on company resources.

    Advice to Management

Develop the leadership skills of your managers.

Quit spending a fortune on "releasing" employees. Develop your employees instead. Implement the bus strategy with good people. If they are in the wrong seat on the bus, find the right seat.

I worked at Cummins as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very good environment that nurtures progress and growth. Never felt evaluated but always felt that I was encouraged to give my best and only the end output was counted which helps to give your best with confidence. Nice people, always always willing to help you.

    Cons

Might be slow for someone coming from a real hi-fi company. There is no structured growth and career path which might be good or bad.
