I have been working at Cummins full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Endless opportunities for career advancement, training, and personal development. A lot of long time employees have "started at the bottom" working as an intern, assembly line worker, or technician and over the years worked their way up to high level engineering positions. Cummins provides the opportunities to make this possible by being flexible with changing jobs and providing endless opportunities for training.

Cons

In some areas there seems to be a culture that you must work as much as possible, even to the point of skipping off-site group events to make your boss happy and look better than your co-workers during evaluations. This same culture seems to bleed into taking vacation time as well as people are too worried to fall behind and look bad.

I have been working at Cummins as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work-life balance is unmatched. One receives complete flexibility in their time and work style. The company rewards the truly ambitious and opens up the pathway to executive positions.

    Cons

With a company of its size, there are many obstacles in communication and sharing of information. Cummins is currently trying to combat that with information sharing (and doing a good job).

  2. "Solid company with competitive salaries but with challenges"

I worked at Cummins as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people, has been a solid supporter of local economy. Improved short term leadership.

    Cons

Direction in going global may diffuse core strengths that makes it an icon in it's industry. Long term leadership.

    Advice to Management

There's a fear that playing catch up on going global has missed the shift to a balanced local strength. Current leading companies seem to recognize they have to keep their US strengths while competing globally. Being strong locally and the culture established in doing that is what made the brand what it is. Not having the systems to support global while at the same time losing local talent through attrition (due to shift of emphasis to global) is resulting in losing the "formula for product excellence".
