Pros

They had some great titles. For some reason they let them go, from bad mgrs to unrealistic sales goals and most importantly no clue to the markets they were in!

Cons

Constantly trying to sell off the titles. Their pros were out in the market making comments that most other officers of a major publishing house would not be caught dead making. In the end just a real nightmare of a sinking ship. Cut salaries, dropped magz/titles completely, just let things go, unrealistic goals in the midst of a depression, etc etc.

Advice to Management

Take a look at how much you are making and how many there are. Back in the day a magazine used to support say a publishers salary, sales, production and the writers. Today they amass titles, have two or three levels of management, the cubicle people and sales people and all the rest are the sacrificial lambs if their science project goes awry. In the end no one is giving them brown stars, they move on, the rest and their families suffer, but hey...that's America now! Right?

    Pros

learn how to play office politics, complete freedom to not produce anything of substance for 37 hrs/week, watch a company on the slow brink of destruction/sale

    Cons

extremely inadequate compensation, hr drives guilt as psychological driving factor for retention (you're lucky to have a job), divisional conflicts & cliques in all offices (between offices) make for a highly toxic environment where contributions are rarely acknowledged or rewarded, company has defaulted on their loans so execs cut investment in resources to keep line and sell off or close established brands (with large audiences).

    Advice to Management

to the financiers of cygnus, find the return in the value of brand assets and invest in the actual product. set performance indicators, ID key personnel in the sales division, get rid of the itnernet folks and their neverending porkjects.

    Pros

The initial feeling of potential, some of the lower level people.

    Cons

Incompetent "managerial" climbers, ready to destroy others to succeed.

    Advice to Management

Bring back the people who mattered. Do away with the yes people.
