I worked at DICK'S Sporting Goods as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Working out of the HQ office was a wonderful experience and a great work environment. People are generally very positive and fun to work with. They love to live the brand and working out during lunch hour is totally normal and encouraged.

Cons

Compensation was low starting out. The only room for advancement is within the Pittsburgh office. Few opportunities elsewhere. Poor graduate program sponsorship.

Advice to Management

Increase compensation and rewards for employees. You have a great office mentality set up but you lose talent on the fundamentals of how much money employees bring home at the end of the day. Was the lowest paid salary when looking at offers out of college.

    I worked at DICK'S Sporting Goods part-time

    Pros

Associate solidarity is amazing. Customers are wonderful and easy to engage in interesting conversation about passions. Breaks are usually given in a timely manner, but not always.

    Cons

Management seems not to talk to each other as much as is needed, and information passed to associates varies wildly from manager to manager. Instead of fixing the issues present, managers would prefer to talk about associates behind their backs to each other or even other associates. The focus on the scorecard percentage and signing everyone up "NO MATTER WHAT" really detracts from the pleasantness of service or the ability to function well in other capacities in the store. Hours were erratic and schedules were changed without notice, often the day before someone was supposed to come in, and then no one was ever notified about the changes. It was cited that it was our responsibility to pay attention to schedule changes (no matter how sudden) and that if we called in to check, management was not obligated to tell us the hours on the new schedule. The WOW sticker program created an area for favoritism, and certain associates would be reprimanded for certain actions even when others were not for the same thing. There is a decided lack of training in the sense that none of the new associates were trained for their positions, and when training did come by it was with each manager saying the other managers were wrong and things actually needed to be done a different way. There was no cohesive agreement on standards or policies within the store. Scheduling priorities were made based on who the managers "liked" or "didn't like" as opposed to paying attention to the work ethic or metrics of the employee. One manager in particular took phone numbers out of files for private, personal use. This place does not value employees at all, as seen by their turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

Focus a little less on the short term metrics - scorecards, credit cards, protection plans, etc - and more on long term goals like improving customer service, improving standards, adhering to policies, perfecting inter-management communication, and taking up issues directly with associates instead of treating the job like a high school drama.
