I worked at DOE Joint Genome Institute full-time

Pros

If one is on the research side, and favored by management, there are many opportunities to work on interesting scientific projects. The salary and benefits are reasonable, given the general stability of employment.

Cons

Upper management shows little (if any) interest in planning, resulting in semi-regular crises. They have a tendency to hire and promote people they feel comfortable with, instead of assessing the needed range of skills & experience. If one isn't on the research side, opportunities for career development or advancement are infrequent.

    Pros

    Reasonable place for doing research
Possibly stable but that could change in future

    Cons

Mediocre upper and mid level leadership (if there is any)
Awful politics makes you wonder if the tax payer's dollars are being used well
    Nepotism/favoritism very visible
    HR usefulness

    Advice to Management

Hire someone with some leadership skills and allow them do their job, don't bring in your mediocre cronies

    Pros

Its a stable position that you can work in the biotech sort of field without worry of constant layoffs or mergers

    Cons

Promotions are few and far between and the positive reinforcement is lacking. the better you are the less cushy the job etc

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more positive reinforcement currently, it is lacking and would be highly beneficial
