Pros

- If you love the beauty industry, you'll love working at Daily Vanity. You'll get to write about the latest news and trends, as well as receive the occasional promotional products from time to time. - Friendly colleagues who you can easily reach out to for help and they will be open to teaching and guiding you should you need it. - Management will establish goals for your job and encourage you to work towards them such as having a certain amount of engagement per article. - Training is provided on the job, so do not worry if you have no prior experience in this industry or field. You will learn about how to write for an online magazine and obtain the latest techniques about SEO writing and writing for an online audience. - Due to the trendy nature of the industry, you will also occasionally get to participate in the company's social media by filming TikToks and other videos. May also have to try beauty hacks or go to beauty salons and write reviews for articles. - Once you get the hang of things, you will be pitching your own stories to write about. If approved, it may or may not be assigned to you.

Cons

- Those who do not understand the beauty industry may struggle. Sometimes what you have to write about is quite technical such as product ingredients, makeup techniques, and so on. - Very small scale company with a tiny writing staff. When I was there, there was basically only one person writing for each website (Daily Vanity has 3 websites). Though the director and the single senior staff member also write articles, the writing team was pretty much the five of us for a while, before one person left and then it became four until I left. - You will have a tight workload. Generally, you will be producing two articles a day. Sometimes it can be one article with some time leftover to do research for another lengthier piece. You will be expected to finish these articles in that specific day, even if it is supposed to go up next week, so there is ample time for seniors to edit your work. - Here's a tip: Do not finish your work ahead of time. If you complete an article before its due date, they will simply assign more work for you. There is no point in trying to lessen your workload ahead of time. - Easily burnt out environment. One or two articles are published everyday on the Daily Vanity and Daily Vanity Malaysia websites, with Avenue One being the least updated website. The writing team is way too small to sustain this. It is not like they never stopped trying to hire people - it seems as if everyone they were interviewing were unable to pass their writing test.

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate that you've come up with a very thorough review that has highlighted some of the reasons why current and ex-employees appreciate the company, including a friendly environment, supervisors who care about your career progression, and strong training that equips you with everything you need to know to do your job well. At the same time, we'd like to address a few of the pointers you have listed under the cons of working for the company. 1. Those who do not understand the beauty industry may struggle. Sometimes what you have to write about is quite technical such as product ingredients, makeup techniques, and so on. This is certainly true and having writers who understand the subject they're writing about is what makes our readers and followers value the content we've been putting up as a beauty publication. Hiring subject matter experts is a reasonable expectation for any company in any industry. 2. You will have a tight workload. Generally, you will be producing two articles a day. Publications in our industry are known for having KPIs for writers that include the number of articles to submit per day. In our case, it'll be 2 articles per day (1 long form and 1 short form). Based on anecdotal study, we understand that this aligns us to the median when compared to other similar publications. The articles that writers work on may be time-sensitive or evergreen. Time-sensitive articles go up on the same day while evergreen articles may be placed in an archive to be used on days when news is a little slower or if an article that's expected to go up is unable to. The purpose isn't to give seniors ample time to edit your work but to let the editors have room to wriggle should there be unexpected changes in the calendar. At the same time, it also allows writers bandwidth if they need to work on a more time-sensitive news that's released on the same day; evergreen articles that were initially assigned can then be pushed to a later date for submission. 3. If you complete an article before its due date, they will simply assign more work for you. The company has a culture that is open and communicative, as you can probably see from the many reviews that highlighted it. All employees are encouraged to discuss with their supervisors to work out deadlines that are reasonable - for the employee and the business. When it comes to the workload of writers, it has always been pegged at 2 articles per day (1 long form and 1 short form), and when new articles are assigned (for example, advertorials), editors will re-plan deadlines so that the writer doesn't take on more than what he/she is expected to fulfil for the day. Assigning more work beyond 2 articles (1 long form and 1 short form) per day is extremely rare and practically unheard of. 4. One or two articles are published everyday on the Daily Vanity and Daily Vanity Malaysia websites, with Avenue One being the least updated website. The writing team is way too small to sustain this. During the time when you were in our employment, we had 8 full-time staff on the editorial team, as well as a robust network of freelancers that we worked with, to sustain our growing business. We publish 3 to 6 daily articles across all three publications, which is certainly a sustainable load, considering that full-timers contribute up to 2 articles per day. 5. It is not like they never stopped trying to hire people - it seems as if everyone they were interviewing were unable to pass their writing test. Daily Vanity is still at a growth stage and as any business-owner will tell you, recruitment is never a piece of cake. We have put in a stringent process to make sure that we only bring in the best people possible because we know that having qualified new hires is the best way to reduce everyone's workload; instead of needing current managers and executives spend too much time training or correcting mistakes. You are indeed right that we're constantly hiring - we are never stinting on looking for the best talents and expanding the team, and currently, we still have headcounts to fill. Feel free to look at our careers page for the openings available. I assure you, if you are a qualified individual with tenacity and a will to succeed, you'll be embarking on a fulfilling career with lots of growth prospects (we promote employees who excel regularly along with generous raises for them), with a team of colleagues who are helpful and a management that cares about your progress and growth.
