Pros

Pros? Other than saying "I work at the Dallas Morning News", none. It's a GOOD company and GOOD people but it's a declining company just like everyone mentioned.

Cons

It's a tough job. My first assignment was, "sit with these 6 people for the next month. Learn what they do and do it. They're getting laid off next month." One lady was there for 35 years! When a company lets people like that go, you know they're in trouble. The CEO offered $25,000 to anyone who could come up with a good idea to help the company. I pitched the "NEWS PASS". This is similar to the Tollway for digital subscriptions. Feel like reading the digital paper today? You only get tapped for 25 cents from you account. Don't have time to read today, or you're going on vacation? No sweat, you're not charged. Enough with the "Starts" and "Stops" and "Vacation holds". Did they like the idea? Who knows, I never heard any feedback. I automated the 6 jobs and a year later left the company to the relief of my manager. The money is that tight. Good Luck DMN, I wish you the best.

Advice to Management

Stop stalling, get the Digital News Pass up and running. I admire your determination to remain a newspaper company but when was the last time you saw a 22 year old person sit down on a Sunday morning with a Sunday paper, cup of coffee, cigarette, and knocked that SOB out. Seriously! I don't get the paper anymore. "Don't have time to read the Monday paper today, I'll save it for tomorrow. Tuesday: Dang, no time today either. Wednesday: OK, I have time. Should I read Monday's News? Tuesday? Hmmm, no I hate old news. What a waste". Cancel my paper please!!
