I have been working at DePaul University full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Work/life balance. You won't make as much as your average corporate job, but you get a 35-40 hour week leaving time for your other interests, loved ones or volunteer activities. 100k+ a year will never buy back time working on your personal projects or personal relationships. Workload is reasonable, fairly relaxed work environment despite odd dress codes in some places, people are professional, facilities are up to date and the U is growing. Lots of material benefits in the form of 'demon discounts'. If you can find a position you enjoy and can make it work, there's a fair chance it's yours for the rest of your career.

Cons

Because of the lower salary grading the U has trouble attracting talent which leads to some positions being less than useful due to who has been hired. Further, you may find that folks with "low" grades are particularly fresh and experienced and will struggle to find purpose within the organization and will eventually leave as a result of not being empowered or recognized. Unless you're in an office that's growing there's little room for advancement and good positions tend to be occupied for many years if not decades. As with most locations in higher ed, there is bureaucracy but DePaul moves more quickly than others. Despite this, change may happen too slow for those outside higher ed and the pace can be excruciating to those from fast-paced work environments.

Advice to Management

Enable and empower those under you who are more current and experienced. A good manager someone who is wise enough to know who is talented and able, and finding ways to empower them.
