I have been working at Debenhams full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Employee of the year, was made to feel of value.
Training and store setups meant i could travel around the country
    helped build connections and confidence.

    Cons

Hard to progress, have seen many people try and burn out.
    (myself included)

    Advice to Management

While not all staff on the sales floor really care about their
job, those who do should have some way of making suggestions
or sharing their views to those further up the chain. Sales staff wrongly
scared by middle to upper management/have no method to voice their
    ideas.

I worked at Debenhams part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved most of my team. Relaxed atmosphere (except at busy times). Job is actually incredibly easy.

    Cons

No training, at all. Minimum wage. Ridiculous hours - you will often be expected to work til midnight then start again at 9am. Almost impossible to get contracted to more than 12 hours a week. In my experience, extreme favouritism - I've seen staff with 20 years experience get overlooked for promotion in favour of a Christmas temp. YOU are expected to train the Christmas temps, new staff, and even your superiors. No communication. Stores only focus is opening account cards. Have to pay for your own uniform. Hard to take your holiday time off (but you won't get paid for it if you can't take it). You'll work until 7pm on Christmas Eve and 6am on Boxing Day. You'll probably never get a performance review (I never did in 5 years), and this is because of the biggest con of all; You will most likely never get anywhere in this company. In-store promotions are virtually unheard of, they always hire from 'out of store', which means your supervisors won't know the job as well as you do. It's impossible to 'climb the ladder', however good you might be.

    Advice to Management

Give experienced staff the chance to work their way up. It's not fair to offer a new member of staff a supervisor position without even advertising it, just because 'she was nice'.
