I have been working at Dell full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Smart People and aggressive marketing and brand focus. Dynamic environment allowing significant movement and opportunity to work different areas. Encourages a very social environment and multiple venues to be heard.

Cons

Immature software organization. Marketing & Procurement drives too many of the initiatives / ideas (versus Engineering). Large company - easy to feel lost or like you're not making an impact. The company seems a tad ADD (Attn Deficit) and doesn't seem to commit to a long-term cohesive product strategy outside of counting cost $$$ or profit $$$

Advice to Management

Increase the software-related budget and resources (4x -5x). Commit way more money into R&D in both consumer and commercial divisions. Encourage non-marketing types to drive more initiatives. Take more chances in consumer space.

I worked at Dell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Dell looks great on the resume

    Cons

Outsourcing jobs in both production (leading to inferior product quality), internal sales support, and customer support, which leads to bad customer service in the end.
Missing the innovative thinking that put Dell on the map.
Work load doubled to compensate for lay-offs
Payment structure only pays in halves instead of quarterly, so double the work, half the pay.
Upper-management focus on pushing retention accounts online (Dell Premier Pages), but it breaks frequently and is a great way to lose customers.

    Advice to Management

Dell needs to go back to it's "Customer Focused" and innovative thinking that put it on the map in the first place.

I worked at Dell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Experiences, some co-workers, never the same boss for more than 8 months...

    Cons

Conservative moves and behind the 8-ball constantly in the evolving Tech world.
