I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Great job and project diversity for those who excel. Virtual working is encouraged and supported. Very diverse and inclusive environment - with a common denominator of everyone has to work hard and fast.

Cons

Not for everyone - you have to work hard, Dell runs very lean and there isn't much "fluff". In the US, there is a very dispersed workforce, so "connecting" is very virtual, which isn't for everyone.

Advice to Management

Excited to see results of the transformation - going private will be very exciting for us.

I worked at Dell as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility - You can work from home though some people definitely take advantage of this aspect
Compensation - Base is low compared to other tech companies, but slightly above average for Texas.

    Cons

HR - Seriously. The worst I've ever seen. Not responsive, how can they expect to hire anyone if the person with the offer can't even get a hold of the HR department to discuss the offer??
Strategy - Upper management doesn't listen to mid management, therefore mid management has its hands tied for the most part and extremely frustrated. The company needs to change direction, and without listening to the in house experts, how can it be successful?
Meetings - I've never been in a situation where it takes 20 minutes going over the minute details of the second slide of a presentation only to run out of time to cover 7 slides in an hour. This seems to happen all the time at Dell.

    Advice to Management

Either HR is overworked or they just don't care. Hire more staff or retrain/lay off the bad apples.
Listen to what mid management are suggesting.
Invest more in R&D and innovation rather than relying on ODMs to do every design/manufacturing.
Michael Dell needs to reign in the company, he's a very smart man, but has taken a back seat and its obvious the company is lagging behind competitors.
