I worked at Dell full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great people, flexibility to work from home, good pay/benefits, demanding/challenging work

Curious to see how/if going private this year will help Dell better execute on its LT strategies...

Cons

Stressful, low work-life balance, limited upward mobility (flat organization)

Advice to Management

Overall, great company to work for

    Pros

Work/life balance is pretty good. Lots of training opportunities. Good people.

    Cons

There used to be a clear direction. Middle management seems unsure of their decisions making and it affects moral.

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work from Home opportunities. Tuition reimbursement. Casual attire. Good Benefits

    Cons

Zero work life balance. You are a salaried employee but do not get paid if you take time off unless you use vacation or sick leave. You do not get paid overtime if you pull 60-70 hour weeks. Unreliable work tools. Inconsistent and incompetent first line management - the boss is either weak or disengaged or a tyrant - no consistent middle ground. Unpredictable and seemingly ambiguous setting of quotas. A lot of manipulating of bonuses and paychecks. All you can count on is your base pay. No clear way to figure out if your paycheck is correct or not. No way to advance without role jumping. Not recognized for performance or loyalty within role. Top performer but no raise for YEARS. No advocacy for the employee at all. Corporate ombudsman is a joke. Shady business dealings by Mike Dell resulting in fines and sanctions.
This is the world's largest shell game.

    Advice to Management

Get honest with your employees and advocate to treat them with dignity and respect. Stop with the smoke and mirrors. Your sales group is the backbone and front line of your business. All the acquisitions and press releases do not make you successful - your employees make you successful. Invest more in the quality of Dell's valuation of employees. Stop treating your employees like cattle.
