I have been working at Dell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The outside sales people and front line managers are talented and extremely capable (for the most part). The products are solid and the product portfolio is well rounded which allows you to the ability to have some kind of conversation with any customer, regardless of the industry they are in or the issues they are facing.

    Cons

The issues that Dell is facing internally are the same issues (or rather demons) that Dell has been facing from 5 and 10 years ago. Michael Dell seems to have unknowlingly surrounded himself with "yes men" and he loves to focus on the 3 to 5 year plan, but I dont think he has any idea how messed up the day to day opperation is. The interanal search features of Dell's sales tools are horrible. It takes Dell days to get skus created and turned on. Dell's instance to Sale Force is a complete joke. Even people from Sales Force can take one look at it and tell you it was set up poorly and it never gets fixed. Sales reps have no visibility to their attainment all quarter long and sales reps are basically punished over time for bringing in large one-time deals. The amout of churn and reorganization that upper managment creates is completely rediculous and uncalled for. Your success as an individual contributor is closely tied to how good (or bad) your manager is.

    Advice to Management

Stop labeling poor planning and horrible execution as "dealing with ambiguity". Upper management likes to confuse the term "dealing with ambiguity" with "suffering through upper managements perpetual stupidity". Identify short term problems and fix them. You will win over the hearts and minds of sales reps.
