I worked at Dell full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Great salary and benefits, work life balance, get to work with cool tech. Job is safe and awesome IFF you get to work on strategic products that Michael wants.

Cons

Lack or forward thinking. Chasing the "latest and greatest buzzword tech". Constantly rearranging departments and laying people off, then turning around and rehiring people.

Advice to Management

Plan ahead more than 1 year. Killing off product lines, then resurrecting them 6 month later shows lack of foresight.

I worked at Dell full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Despite it's size, Dell is a pretty collaborative environment. Most folks are willing to help you navigate your way around the company to the BU and team members that can help with projects. The company is also pretty transparent with its employees about how the overall business is performing and rewarding/recognizing employees for a job well done.

Most have a flexible work schedule (i.e. telecommute or work in the office certain days) which lends itself to a good work/life balance.

    Cons

The company recently went private so there's a lot of churn and restructuring (i.e. layoffs, employees leaving, etc.) Additionally, like any large company there's a fair amount of internal politics and rigorous process which can hinder getting the job done. Promotions are hard to come by and comp packages are a little on the weak side.

    Advice to Management

Continue to look for ways to streamline process to enable employees to get their work done.

    Pros

Had a great team, and was able to work independently with a flexible work from home/office schedule.

    Cons

Constant shifting can make it hard to advance forward and cause confusion. Experience can also vary between teams since Dell is such a large place to work.
