"The most bureaucratic place on earth: Delta Dental Plans and Delta Dental of California"

    Pros

The salary is decent and if you're competent you're usually treated well by both co-workers and management. The building is right where SOMA and the financial district meet. It's easily accessible by freeway and public transit. The area around it is vibrant with museums, restaurants, etc for after hours and lunch breaks. All of the front line people I work with are very smart. Most of them are very competent, even genuinely talented at what they do. Most of the front line managers are pretty solid. At the director level and upward, you have almost nothing but anonymous names and faces who make the big decisions with seemingly no knowledge of what's happening on the ground.

    Cons

In my 14 year career as an IT consultant, it is the by far the most bureaucratic place I've ever worked. That includes having done contract stints at two different state government agencies. It is a wonder that anything gets done. Honestly, if it weren't for the contractors and the offshored/outsourced resources, nothing would get done. They're in a multi year project to upgrade some of their core systems from legacy mainframe applications. Much of this has been done on a team by team or department by department basis with no over arching plan. Complex areas of IT that usually require a clearinghouse "center for excellence" type of standards planning are done on the fly. So you have data elements with the same names being defined differently by different teams. There are no standards for meta data development. Systems are implemented without any sizing for anticipated use.

You know those competent, smart, even talented folks I mentioned above? Most of them are utterly frustrated in their attempts at getting stuff done by senior leadership that appears to be beyond incompetent. They make deeply technical decisions based on what they've been told by sales people from vendors. Politics and turf protection trumps logic, precedent, or established industry best practices in most decision making.

    Advice to Management

When you hire experts, listen to them.
