I have been working at Denver Public Schools as a contractor (More than 5 years)

Pros

You could make a difference if you had administrative support.

Cons

There is a general lack of solid administrative leadership and consequences for students. Many of the schools have been trashed by the students.

Advice to Management

Raise the expectations of students and back your teachers. Enforce truancy policies.

I worked at Denver Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Professional Development Opportunities, team building, working with youth

    Cons

Low pay, long hours, disorganized, last minute changes stirring up the organization, and poor discipline structure were the most frustrating. Additionally, many turn around schools are utilizing teaching fellows to teach small groups, however, there is very little training in classroom management and you are training as you go. This does a disservice to the kids who need highly skilled professional help/rigorous behavioral intervention & discipline. I did not feel comfortable in the environment I was in, nor was I prepared to handle it, and the chaotic working environment did not allow for time to learn on the job.

    Advice to Management

Solidify current policies rather than continually changing them, creating confusion and greater chaos rather than much needed structure, especially in turn around schools

I worked at Denver Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay and hours are great

    Cons

I am not sure the hiring practices are the best, they do not seem to take care of employees who have been laid off and have years of experience

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring friends and family if someone else has more years of experience
