Pros

Senior Management is educated and appropriate for their positions. Management is in frequent contact with all departments, even at night. Insurance benefits are slightly pricy but great. The hospital does promote from within when possible. There are many opportunities to train and keep updated on latest information, technologies, strategies, etc.

Cons

As an LPN, you will not receive a sign on bonus ($20,000), retention bonuses, or payment for your student loans like the RN's do. You will also not be offered opportunities of leadership regardless of how skilled a worker you are. The lack of an RN title WILL hold you back. There are issues with time off as it pertains to "excused absences." If it's not pre-planned, it's unexcused (even miscarriages). Another issue was when a fellow nurse adopted a baby but was denied maternity leave because she didn't birth the baby, sad but true. The yearly raises are 3% across the board. They say they don't keep people who are only worth a 2% raise, but that means that even the hardest workers can't get more than 3%. Their 401k matching has decreased to 1.5% from 6%.

Advice to Management

Provide opportunities for hard workers to advance, regardless of title. In this case, maybe they would actually feel proud enough to earn their RN. LPN's have a lack of respect from management and techs. RN's realize that we're basically doing same job and they are generally more appreciative than anyone else, so don't fault them. The pay is competitive, but the unexcused absences don't allow for emergencies.

I worked at Des Peres Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Cafeteria: Great Clam Chowder! Nice, friendly employees.

    Cons

Management, unprofessional, clueless of the needs of staff, inconsiderate at times and ignorant of the job each surgical tech took on.

    Advice to Management

Management are just puppets to the CEO and his minions. Management just did what corporate wanted them to do and to be. It's a money/power game. Hard, honest workers, like myself, were just replaceable. We stand up to the truth and we point out dishonesty; yet they (supervisors) look the other way. Patient Safety wasn't an option and how easy to cover up the mistakes and the lack of effective sterile processing! Listen to your workers, listen and investigate and do not ever second guess anything; because it's the patient's lives that are being jeopardized.
