I worked at Design Workshop full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

A superb starting platform for young designers for its effective career training programs and hands-on mentorship practice by senior leaders. A caring and nurturing work place with high morale and camaraderie. Truly amazing and talented colleagues, with non-hierarchical and open atmosphere. Very organized internal operational processes made the daily work efficient.

Cons

Difficult to maintain an ambitious career track after certain years, as the upper echelons are pretty saturated and not revolving. When you hit a ceiling it's time to go make a new nest.

Advice to Management

Had great respect for the senior leadership in general. If anything, the firm tended on the conventional side of current conceptual horizon within the environmental design profession. Perhaps wider and deeper explorations into the international and academic arena would bring new vigor to the theoretical and tactical discussions within the firm.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Design Workshop as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The nice thing about Design Workshop is that they throw you into all aspects of the project right from the start giving you thorough experience of the design process and getting the design built. The principal is always willing to help you with any questions or problems which is nice because it gives you the opportunity to rub shoulders with an experienced landscape architect, which is not usually the case with other firms. Everyone's ideas are valued and considered from the first day of being hired wether your an intern or a principal. There is a high degree of transparency within the firm. The firm is always pushing for their employees to continue their education. Also the culture is pretty great with the office feeling open and fun while producing excellent work.

    Cons

The only con is that interns don't get any benefits which is pretty standard in the professional world but this review says I need 20 words minimum and that was he only thing I could think of. Other then that I think the firm is awesome.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

    Pros

The projects are interesting and many of the employees are great people to work with. The health insurance and retirement benefits are good.
    Focus on learning opportunities.
Employees are trusted with a lot of responsibility.

    Cons

Extreme lack of work life balance. Even management doesn't practice this balance, allow they claim it exists/is important in interviews.
    Staff seems supremely unhappy.
Management preaches being the change or "solutions, not problems" but shoots down any suggestion that isn't "change nothing -- there's no problem here".
Pay is low for amount of work and time away from family required.

    Advice to Management

HR staff seems to truly care about improving environment and morale issues. Take their suggestions seriously instead of going through the motion. Practice compassion toward the employees instead of becoming defensive at the suggestion of a problem with management style. This might actually fix the very real issues within the office. Don't expect your employees to be the only ones altering their behavior.
