I worked at Dillard's full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

I was lucky and had a great hands on management crew who were visible and spent time coaching us. Environment was pleasant except Christmas when everybody was stressed

Cons

Nights, holidays, weekends... Gotta love retail. Customers these days are pretty rude and talk down to you

Advice to Management

I wish floor plans and color schemes didn't have to be so rigid and department/area managers could exercise some of there own creativity.

    I worked at Dillard's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great pay
Team work and meeting great clientele
    Excellent opportunity for sales experience
Great place if the mall is booming with business or prices are competitive

    Cons

Count the months your there, if you don't make quota for the 3 months that count your out.
This relates to if the mall is busy or not, little business means little chance of succeeding.
Some areas such as Home area are a death trap because of competition and needing constant clients buying dishes, bedding and appliances.

    Advice to Management

New marketing through email is working, but need to market more, there is not enough demand for the demand that places such as Macy's sell at a lower or equal price.

    I worked at Dillard's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Honestly, not too many. The customers you meet working in retail can be a bonus if you like interacting and helping people. Dillard's itself... They start you at a higher hourly rate than other retail stores, but the way they structure your raises offsets that advantage. The biggest pro is a deep discount on their merchandise. 40% employee discount even on sales.

    Cons

The way the company structures it's pay raises and compensation for its employees creates a cutting, unhappy environment for it's employees.

    Advice to Management

Restructure the way you give raises and stop reducing employees pay if they don't make their sales quota. Offer direct commission payments on top of a base salary. This way you are honestly rewarded for your efforts and not breaking you back to get a pittance of a raise in 6 months or a year.
