I have been working at Dollar General part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Worked very well with my schedule
Coworkers were great
Good as a starting out job for the experience

Cons

Bad upper management
Not enough store coverage. Managers are in the store alone for 4-6 hours

Advice to Management

If a store needs more hours and the store is suffering because of it, just give them more hours! Cashiers also get 0 control of the cash register and is very inconvenient.

    Pros

This is the type of job that will keep you busy (and I like busy). I get to know and help people in my community.

    Cons

These store are always short staffed. You can expect to get your hours cut with no notice. And this is after busting your tail, covering call outs, trying to complete everyone else's job just to please some district manager who could care less about you or your experience. You will never hear "thank you for increasing sales, thank you for anything, or the words good job". All you will hear is do this, now do that. Stock the shelves and completely work the truck in two day, all while you are all alone in the store running a cash register. Then you will get chewed out for not completing every little tiny thing they want done all because you were trying to help their customers. A note to their customers: they don't like you they only like your wallet. Assistant managers can be held accountable for the managers shortcomings. Also store managers won't get fired for not doing their job simply because dollar general can't find enough idiots to run their stores and don't want to have to find replacements.

I have been working at Dollar General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Huge company finally getting the technology caught up. Lots of mentors to choose from and experiences to gain. The Lower Field Operations organization is approachable and interactive. Benefits are comparable with other retailers. they do focus on promotion from within.

    Cons

Too many higher ups with old school, gotcha mentality, no human voice! Above the regional level the operations team is aloof and arrogant, the have no real understanding of the fields work load. The Human Resource group is a tight knit firewall whose only function is to protect the corporate entities and achieve bonus for themselves.

    Advice to Management

Look at the real world and revamp the upper levels and the HR department. Add a human voice to the organization, deploy and utilize Employee Opinion Surveys. Take the employees concerns and issues to heart.
