I have been working at Dollar Tree full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Not rocket science. Great place for students or those who need flexibility, or do not want to work long hours or need to. Not a lot of heavy lifting or physical labor. Making customers happy by offering them a place they shop at that they feel is saving them money,

Cons

There is minimal training for the employees. at any level. Skeleton crews. Expectations of productivity for the undesirable wages, employee turnover. Being expected to work off the clock, when there isn't any one to manage the cashiers requests, receive freight, stock product, answer phone calls, help customers with problems and exchanges while they are clocked out? you cannot leave the store unmanaged, but you have to clock out for a break.....If you are off the clock, you are not working...not managing...No inventory control, merchandise placement plans that don't fit the space in the store, too many items not enough homes, not enough product being allocated to the store to satisfy the demands of the customers...

Advice to Management

Pay employees what they deserve. Re-evaluate the model in place for productivity, time allotted, sales. Send product that is in demand, keep it coming.

I have been working at Dollar Tree full-time

    Pros

-its a job in a bad economy.
-having a job helps you to get a better job.
    -experience.

    Cons

-hours (they say they don't want you to schedule under the "minimum" but they not only want you to they expect it.) even if you are in the store completely alone.
-security... let's just say i never feel safe at work.
    - you can't actually fire anyone ever.. They have to basically stab you in the face with a knife in front of at least 3 witnesses to be able to fire them.
-mandatory 6 day workweeks in fourth quarter, the stores aren't actually busy enough to need you there 6 days.
    - sales expectations are INSANE. they say you are eligible to bonus off your sales but then if you are on track to bonus the company ups the amount needed to bonus so you don't bonus.
-You are somehow expected to retain good cashiers by giving them less than 15 hours a week at minimum wage and treating them like dirt (actually been told they are just "cogs" by higher ups)
-as a store manager you will spend 90% of your time stocking because you don't have the payroll to have anyone else stock.
-if something in your store breaks they WILL NOT fix it, instead you will get constantly yelled at for not having it (example: your internet won't work and you get yelled at for not doing payroll online...)
-They are the CHEAPEST company ever... I know everything is a dollar but come on
-The customers... wow a dollar store attracts some winners. And forget it if you think you can kick out the man who called one of your managers fat, a slave, racial slurs, etc... because you can't

    Advice to Management

Go on the show undercover boss... You may just learn that you have some good people at the bottom that you are telling your SMs to treat badly. If you want to promote from within then PROMOTE within. Stop the super part time hours and be less cheap with payroll. don't up speh goal to 138 when its busy.. that gives me less hours than when it is slow. I need hours when we are busy for a little thing called CUSTOMER SERVICE.
