Pros

Good salary for the North SF Bay area. Dow is a small fast-paced company, and you have lots of opportunities to wear lots of hats. Very results-oriented environment.

Cons

Communication from executive management and sharing of information across functional areas is sorely inadequate. Micromanagement is king at the senior management level. Dow struggles between trying to be a service provider business versus an internal drug development company - doing neither role really well.

Advice to Management

The new direction of Dow / Valeant to reduce internal R&D headcount and costs and focus more on acquiring later-stage drug products may benefit stockholders in the short term, but this is not likely to be a good long-term strategy if Valeant wants to be a growing specialty pharma company.

I worked at Dow Pharmaceutical full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There was the opportunity to develop some really interesting financial/operational systems within this contract services organization. There were some great people here, and many fascinating stories to share. Nearly everyone appreciated efforts that gave them greater insight into the business or made processes less cumbersome.

    Cons

Growth potential within their market niche was limited. Not everyone was willing to recognize the obstacles the company needed to overcome.

    Advice to Management

Focus on reducing non-valued added activities.

  2. "Too many managers are out for themselves."

    Pros

If you need to gain experience in the industry, this is a good place to become well rounded in many areas.

    Cons

The corporate attitude of making the employees feel that they should just be thankful that they have a job in order to justify the low wages and minimal increases of salary for the rarely given promotion.

    Advice to Management

managment needs to understand that when departments have to lay people off that by eliminating the operators and not cutting the team leaders and managers that this doesn't help as the people left in the lab become overwhelmed as the managers never come into the lab to lend a hand. This effects the quality of the work and the time to complete cre quests. The place has become very top heavy.
