Pros

Compensation relative to the cost of living is strong. Gallo is a private company influenced less by short term performance than long term performance. Predictable business cycle is based on grape harvest.

Cons

Gallo IS department has adopted bureaucratic blend of: 1) non-technical "analysts" that "face" with the customer but are many times technically under-skilled to make a strong impact and usually end-up "in the way" of people actually getting things done, 2) frustrated developers and technical experts, and 3) low-initiative and fairly clueless mid-level management selected more for their "diverse" gender and race, rather than their "diverse" competency in the IT field. I guess somebody would rather have a department that looks good in a photo rather that one which is aggressive, competent, and garners confidence from its customers.

Advice to Management

To many of you, please stop charading as IT managers. Get behind real innovation and not just what's spoon fed to you or forced on you.

    Pros

Gallo pay average compensation for the central valley area
Low Cost of living area, it very cheap to live in Modesto

    Cons

Gallo runs on an extremely silo'ed bureaucracy where selected MBA's are given preferential treatment for advancement. There are a lot of technical tools but very few of them leverage effectivly.

    Advice to Management

Flatten the reporting structure. Force every manager to have 5 direct reports or more. Cut do nothing paper pushers out of the organization. Senior management seems to know a lot about wine, but IT is not their primary thing.

    Pros

Pay is one of best in the region
Many good technologies to work with

    Cons

Very bureaucratic with rampant favoritism. Atrocious facilities trailers, former grocery stores and houses as work places.

    Advice to Management

Fire any manager with less than 5 direct reports. Too many layers of middle management. I'd say senior management is doing well.
