  2. "pay & benefits competitive, but bonus system highly flawed and option awards too small / too infrequent"

    Pros

salary is competitive. formal training budgets are pretty fat. Health insurance quite good. Overtime varies, but not bad for me. Usually equiped with all PCs, etc. that you need to do the job. Several of the buildings in Hopkinton are brand new and well equipped with Gyms, very good cafeterias, etc. onsite MBA program, software engineering program, plus tuition assistance pretty generous. The company has spent alot of money (too much in my opinion) on sponsorships to Red Sox & Patriots, so EMC corporate events sometimes held at high profile locations (Gillette stadium) or with celebrities). Internal training facilities excellent

    Cons

the rewards given to lower level employees shrink every year. beauracracy is growing. The bonus system is nonsensical and inconsistent across the company. The company is facing a class-action sexual harassement lawsuit right now, and the culture of the company ten years ago was consistent with some of the claims. But the culture is completely different now in that such matters are more seriously considered. But it is still the case that I have seen several women engineers leave the company because they were not able to reach an agreement with their managers in terms of work / life balance. I have seen top mgmt recently talk about this issue more openly but still EMC loses women due to an unwillingess to give four-day work weeks, etc. to working mothers.

    Advice to Management

increase the monetary incentives to individual contributors. I don't see how EMC is going to attract top talent with the stock having performed so poorly for so long. The stock awards provide too few shares to be meaningful, and in fact awards in the past few years have helped to demoralize because the options granted were too small and the stock has been sideways for so long.
