I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Lot of opportunities for career growth within different divisions. Diverse portfolio of products through acquistions. Market leader. Strong at execution and powerful sales force. If you want a career in sales this is the place to be.

Cons

Large company. Slow to innovate. Old school hierarchical structure not as appealing to younger work force. Places too much emphasis on experience rather than potential and capabilties. Makes it difficult for young, bright and talented people to grow fast.

I have been working at EMC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

EMC has great benefits and offers decent market salary. Depending on department, you can expect bonuses to keep up as well.

You can expect lots of personal time between projects. For example, one coworker plays runescape and views netflix on his phone.

    Cafeteria, gyms, telecommute option

Work-life balance (as an engineer), is what you make it. Sometimes I leave early, sometimes I stay until I complete set amount of tasks. In this case, EMC does have a decent grasp of employee relations in this area.

    Cons

EMC can make you comfortable in your job so much so that you can become unmarketable. You really have to try outside of work hours if you have passion in your area of expertise and DON'T want to be pidgeon-holed.

    HR is a joke.

Even though the company is doing great now, deck chairs are moving at the top. This should signal caution.

Gratuitous off-campus gatherings, which do little else but to make new awkward situations.

Managers play favorites much more than any other job that I've experienced. Despite individual efforts to learn the technologies and parlance, respect and potential is passed onto the "inner circle" of senior developers that may or may not have the talent you might. (There are some developers though that are superb, but some are simply just the chosen). If you're not within "the chosen", you will be second-guessed and questioned even in reply-all e-mails.

If you don't drink the storage-koolaid, then you will be even more disengaged than individual circumstances alone would have made you.

    Advice to Management

Everyone's busy, but your job is not only to manage new features coming in the pipe-line but also to manage your employees. Make an effort to discuss where your employees' careers are going and act as a mentor.
